Wednesday, February 7, was World Read Aloud Day and I took advantage of the day. Here it is Friday and I'm just recuperating from a busy reading week. I guess you could say I celebrated World Read Aloud WEEK!
I read to one class of 3rd graders on Tuesday, two classes of 2nd graders and two classes of 3rd graders AND 23 college students on Wednesday, as well as another class of 3rd graders yesterday! My presentation was as much a discussion of the writing process as it is a read-aloud because I think that is a critical connection.
The college kids I read to are getting ready to do a read-aloud next week; I hope they were all read to as children, but not everyone experiences that luxury. I hope that I gave them some good ideas to get started along their teaching paths.
I remember being read to by my dad as my mother was a night nurse when my brother and I were young. And I loved reading to my kids when they were young. I have heard that some grandparents now read to their grand kids over Zoom or Facetime, and I think that is an excellent idea. I wish I had thought of that.
If you have some children in your life, try to find times to share books or tell stories with them. It will help them become imaginative and give them opportunities to interact with wonderful words and luscious language.
Let's all have a February Fry-day, that MAY be record-breaking temps!
