Courage on Stage:

The Role of Theater in Building Courage and Nurturing Confidence in Children

Winnie Acts Up introduces the art of theater and encourages oral presentation to grade school students. Winnie is a shy child in an unfamiliar environment who gains confidence as she meets new friends in a children’s theater camp setting. Colorful illustrations enhance Winnie’s challenge to learn lines, while a repetitive phrase, “You will remember on Friday,” holds kids’ interest and contributes to a satisfying ending. Unique theater vocabulary is highlighted throughout. Ages 6-10.

The story of Winnie promotes important basic skills:

  • Cognitive benefits improve reading skill, problem-solving and decision-making;

  • Emotional support increases self-esteem and positive thinking;

  • Real-life scenarios foster relatability and build a caring community;

  • Safe space for expression encourages healthy risk-taking and personal bravery;

  • Empowerment through performance enables self-expression and acceptance.
