Happy National Cat Day!

I had to honor Inky yesterday as National Cat Day! Since adopting us 2 summers ago, she has become the queen bee of the household. She has not only adapted to our screwy schedules, but also followed us around the house reminding us what those schedules are.
She greets us every morning with a conversation about how empty her bowl is and how slow Mama is filling it. She knows which door needs to open for food to be found, then jumps up on her table to show exactly where the bowl is.
When Bella dings her "Outside Time" bell, Inky runs to the front door and mews until it is opened. She precedes Bella out to check for any stink bugs who might have snuck in a door crack. When Bella returns, Inky might be waiting in a dark corner or on a chair arm, ready to pounce as a welcome back.
Cookie time is called after dinner and both Bella and Inky come running from wherever they've been. Bella takes her treat like a champion offering to sit or shake, while Inky tries to show Papa how to remove the lid and stick her head in the jar if he doesn't hurry up.
In the evening during news time, we all relax in the living room. Bella sleeps while Inky wears her kitty tunnel like a tent and whacks a tennis ball around a never-ending circle. Or Inky wakes Bella for some teasing time, until she's had enough.
When the TV goes off and "bedtime" is announced, Inky reminds Mama yet again where the food is so she can nibble at night.

Fortunately I'm not superstitious of black cats. And Inky must have known she'd be welcomed when she came to our deck at 3 months old, just skin and bones. It was hard to hold her when she felt so fragile. But now she's 6 cuddly pounds and allows a 10-second-hug several times a day.

If you love cats or just like reading stories about them, I recommend James Herriot's books. As a vet, he wondered what animals would say if they could talk. These are a few of his books about cats:
Cat Stories (1994)
Moses the Kitten (1974)
Oscar, the Cat About Town (1977)
The Christmas Day Kitten (1976)
